Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF)
Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF)
PEMFs are non-invasive therapeutic tools that emit low-frequency electromagnetic fields to stimulate and support the body’s natural healing processes at a cellular level. They work by producing strong magnetic pulses which are capable of penetrating and passing through the membranes of the cells, inducing small electrical currents within tissues by facilitating ion exchange across the cellular membranes and through the ion channels, which is thought to enhance cell metabolism, improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and promote tissue regeneration. They basically recharge the batteries of the cells!
How They Work
The human body naturally has its own electric and magnetic fields, and cellular activities rely on this electrical signalling. When cells are damaged by stress, toxicity, injury, or illness, their electrical charge can be disrupted. Normally, cells should show about −70 mv of electrical potentials across their membranes. At the time of inflammation, this charge may reduce to around −50 and with degenerative diseases including cancer, it goes down to only −20 mv. At zero, the cell is dead!
(A minus symbol is used here to indicate more of negative charge inside the cells in comparison to the outside environment.)
PEMF devices help the body’s healing process by:
- Inducing Electrical Currents: The pulsed magnetic fields create microcurrents in the tissue which help to “recharge” the cells and restore their natural function.
- Improving Cell Function: This interaction helps balance ionic exchange (i.e. magnesium, calcium, potassium, and sodium) across cell membranes, which is essential for healthy cellular processes, nutrient absorption, neural transmissions, and waste excretion.
- Enhancing Circulation and Oxygenation: The magnetic fields produced by the machine can result in the dilation of blood vessels, thereby increasing blood flow and the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to damaged areas.
- Resolving and Modulating Inflammation: PEMF therapy has been proven to help regulate pro- and anti-inflammatory pathways, leading to reduced swelling, bruises and pain.
Common Uses
PEMF therapy is used for a various conditions including:
- Pain Management: PEMF devices are widely used to relieve chronic and acute pain associated with conditions such as osteoarthritis, bursitis, neck, shoulder and low back pain and more. The best result is achieved when it is used in combination with ither techniques including what makes muscles relax and release the excessive pull causing the joint pain and degenerations in long term.
- Post-Operative Recovery: They can help reduce pain and swelling after surgery and accelerate the recovery from injuries and intense workouts.
- Bone Healing: They are FDA-approved to help heal non-union fractures and as an adjunct to cervical spinal fusion surgeries. The act of TMP (Transmembrane potential) enhancement is a key issue for bone, ligament and tendon healing.
- Wellness and Performance: for a healthier body and enhancing athletic performance and recovery, it is a must having better circulation and oxygenation, as well as less inflammation blocking the natural flow of life (healing energy)
